Blasts hit an electoral office in central Nigeria on Friday night, a polling place as parliamentary voting was under way in the northeastern city of Maiduguri on Saturday and a vote collating centre in the same city Saturday evening.

At least 13 people were killed in the explosions and dozens of others were wounded, but the toll was likely to rise because details remained unclear from the blasts on Saturday.

"It's a bomb explosion at the collation centre," said emergency management agency spokesman Yushau Shuaib of the attack on Saturday evening, confirming information from local residents in Maiduguri.

Residents said there were injuries, while a government source said on condition of anonymity that a number of people had been killed.

The blasts cast a pall over what otherwise seemed to be a step forward for Nigeria, with this month's landmark elections seen as a crucial test of whether it can break with a history of deeply flawed polls.

Presidential elections are set for April 16, while governorship and state assembly ballots will be held April 26.
