The venerable Millrose Games indoor athletics meeting is changing venues, departing Madison Square Garden after nearly a century for the Armory Track and Field Center.
The Armory, a smaller building in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, is home to an athletics center run by New Balance.
The Armory Foundation, which owns the rights to the meeting, said in a statement Friday that it is trying reinvigorate the meet.
"We just want to breathe some fresh air into this," said Norbert Sander jnr, the executive director of the Armory Foundation.
The next Millrose Games is now scheduled for next January 28 at the Armory, despite the fact that USA Track and Field has opposed the move.
USATF spokeswoman Jill Geer told the New York Times that the federation believes that "elite professional track and field in New York belongs at the Garden."
The Millrose Games, now in their 105th year, have been held at the famed arena since 1914.
In recent years, however, attendance has dwindled and while some of the world's athletics greats have competed there, the Garden's layout for athletics featured a relatively small track -- 11 laps to a mile -- with tight turns, not conducive to fast times.
