s analogy is almost unbelievable and reflects a very narrow view of innovation and progress. The iPad, along with similar Tab devices offered by other cell phone carriers, is not intended to damage American industry or cost jobs. They are viable signs of progress. The publishing industry has been in a steady decline since 24-hour news channels and the Internet have replaced them as a major resource for up-to-the-minute news.
Students no longer carry slates to school or handwrite long term papers. Today, word processors and laser printers have replaced the slate and notebook paper. In a few years, perhaps all students will electronically submit school assignments. Distance learning students already read textbooks and submit homework assignments over the Internet -- all paperless. This is progress.
Jackson did have a valid point about the loss of U.S. jobs by manufacturing the iPad in China. Unfortunately, the era of American manufacturing primacy is long past. High wages, union benefits, environmental concerns and other factors contributed to the decline in American manufacturing over the past two decades. Almost all of the in use in the U.S. are manufactured in Asia, with China and South Korea dominating the market.
The congressman also is seeking a guaranteeing every child in school an iPad, Kindle or other electronic device. Really? With that logic, I want one
